DJN: =DJ Semiconductor Equipment Spending To Double In 2010 -Gartner

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
Following significant declines in 2009, global semiconductor
capital-equipment spending is expected to more than double in 2010, an
industry researcher said.
Gartner Inc. (IT) forecasts spending surpassing $35.4 billion, compared with
2009's $16.6 billion. Gartner in April had said it expected 2010 would
"realize excellent growth."
Many have recently given bullish near-term outlooks on the
information-technology industry as the economy heals and consumer demand
comes back. The technology industry was hit hard by the drop in
discretionary spending during the recession.
Spending growth for semiconductor equipment is expected to slow
significantly into 2011, with Gartner calling for 6.6% growth as
semiconductor markets are expected to grow more slowly.
"We could see a slight slowing in orders as 2010 ends, and the industry
focuses on macroeconomic conditions," said Klaus Rinnen, a managing vice
president at Gartner. "We expect capital-equipment growth to continue
through 2011, but at a reduced rate, as spending responds to slower growth
in the semiconductor markets."
