Israel's reputation to 'deteriorate' after bloodshed
Updated 25 minutes ago

News just heard, 10:43pm, Sydney. Al Jazeera, reporter, (i think) Israel has allowed 5 trucks
to take aid into Gaza. OOPS! Gaza authority is refusing to allow the aid in. It says it is tainted
with blood, and should be returned. This kind of politicking, by either side, is not appealing.

The military said nine activists were killed
when commandos opened fire.

An Israeli journalist and editor for the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper says Israel's international standing will deteriorate after the deadly violence on board an aid flotilla headed for Gaza.

Israel's storming of the pro-Palestinian aid ships left nine people dead and sparked an international outcry.

The UN Security Council has met in an emergency session .. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/06/01/2915479.htm .. to discuss Israel's role in the incident, with most members of the 15-nation body calling for a thorough investigation.

Gideon Levy says Israel's international standing will be impacted by the incident.

"It will just deteriorate and deteriorate. The turning point was Cast Lead and ever since then the world is much less tolerant about Israel," he said.

"Any violent action of Israel is much less tolerated than before and the best proof is what happened yesterday."

Mr Levy has told ABC's PM program the incident is an indication of Israeli defence incompetence.

"All the evidences are very clear. They came there hardly with weapons. They really were expecting - in a very stupid way - that they will get into their ships and will be welcomed with coffee and cake," he said.

"I'm sure and deeply convinced that this was not the intention to kill those activists. But you judge things according to their outcome, not only according to the intentions.

"I think that many, many Israelis are feeling this morning that something went wrong yesterday. About this there is no doubt. They really understand that something went wrong."

Night raid

The military said nine activists were killed when commandos, who stormed a Turkish cruise ship from dinghies and helicopters, opened fire.

A day after the pre-dawn operation some 120 kilometres out in the Mediterranean, details were sketchy and limited to those from the Israeli side. Activists were incommunicado.

Israel puts the blame for the deaths on the organisers of the aid flotilla, saying its soldiers were attacked by a lynch mob, some of whom were armed with clubs and knives.

Aerial footage released by Israel appears to show commandos being attacked as they abseil onto the deck of the ship. .. http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2010/06/01/2914627.htm .. Some Israeli commentators asked why commanders put troops into a position where they were cornered.

But reports from on board the ship say the Israeli soldiers began firing first and that activists were waving white flags.

Mr Levy says the Israeli video must be considered in a wider context.

"The first violent act was trying to stop the boats in the middle of the sea, far away from the Israeli territorial water. This was the first act of violence. Let's remember this," he said.

"Having said this, yes the reaction of the people on the boat was a violent one. I don't think it was necessary. And this should be taken into account.

"There was a violent reaction. The [Israeli] soldiers had to protect themselves. But the question why were they there at all."

Around 700 activists, many Turks but including Israelis and Palestinians as well as five Australians, are being processed in and around Israel's port of Ashdod, where the six ships of the blockade-running convoy had been escorted.

They were detained incommunicado, ensuring no contradiction of Israel's version of the events. A number of those detained have now been released.

Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith confirmed that an Australian man was also shot in the leg during the deadly raid.

Mr Smith said two other Australians known to be aboard the ship - journalist Paul McGeough and photographer Kate Geraghty - were safe after the "terrible and shocking incident".

The wounded Australian has undergone surgery and has been provided with consular assistance following the shooting.

Ms Geraghty's mother Pat says she is worried about her daughter's safety.

She says the last contact she had with her daughter was yesterday afternoon.

She says it was an email, in which her daughter stated that her boat was being followed by an Israeli ship.

Condemnation

The United Nations Security Council has joined the chorus of international condemnation of a deadly Israeli attack on a pro-Palestinian aid flotilla headed for Gaza.

The council, calling for a swift investigation into the incident, condemned "those acts which resulted in the loss of at least 10 civilians and many wounded".

The comments echoed Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's deep concern .. http://abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/06/01/2915244.htm .. over the deaths.

More than 1,000 people turned out to rallies across Australia's capital cities on Tuesday, to protest against the flotilla attack.

The UN statement came at the end of an emergency session that lasted more than 12 hours, pitting Turkey against the United States in calling for a strong and specific condemnation of Israel.

Border clash

Israel's navy says it is ready to stop another aid ship headed to Gaza, playing down the prospect of its forces shying from another confrontation.

Israel's Army Radio reported the MV Rachel Corrie, a converted merchant ship, would reach Gazan waters by Wednesday.

Meanwhile, several Palestinians have clashed with Israeli troops along the Gaza border, in an incident that reportedly left two Palestinians dead.

Israeli public radio reported the deaths, while the army could not immediately confirm the report.

Witnesses on the Gaza side of the border confirmed an exchange of fire followed by some Israeli shelling, as well as an Israeli helicopter firing missiles.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from the Palestinian side as ambulances were not able to enter the area.

Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has vowed to maintain the three-year-old embargo to stop Iranian-backed Hamas from bringing arms to Gaza.

Egypt's president has reportedly ordered the opening of the Rafah border crossing to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

"Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has given orders to open the Rafah border crossing to allow humanitarian and medical aid into the Gaza Strip, as well as to receive medical cases which require access to Egyptian territory," the official MENA agency said.
