2011 Revenge Verde - Auto Shows
The Ford GT will have its revenge. Well, Revenge will have the Ford GT.

What you’re looking at is a new supercar based on the bones of an old one. Underneath the bright-green paint and carbon-fiber bodywork, the Revenge Verde that debuted at the Detroit auto show is essentially a Ford GT. But in place of the GT’s 500-hp, 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 will beat a choice of three V-8 powertrains: a 605-hp Ford crate engine, a 638-hp GM LS9, or a “hybrid V-8” provided by HP2g. (More on that last one in a minute.) Transmissions will include a standard manual or a six-speed sequential box.

It’s tempting to write off the Revenge as yet another pie-in-the-sky supercar with little polish and even less of a future, but the project has a number of big, familiar names behind it. (And it is certainly better than Revenge’s effort from last year, the Factory Five–based GTM-R.) For example, Roush Industries in Michigan will be assembling the all-aluminum rolling chassis—Roush had a big hand in the original Ford GT—as well as installing the Ford engines. Pratt & Miller, also based in Michigan, will be the ones handling the LS9 installation.

Oh, wait, there is a pie-in-the-sky part: That third engine, the “hybrid V-8.” The plan is to eventually have a Revenge plant in Ohio that will install HP2g’s Electromagnetic Pulse powerplant into the rolling chassis. The engine is to incorporate ceramic magnets that act on the crankshaft to generate electric current, creating an electric motor of sorts to power spark and accessories. The engine is said to both deliver 400 hp and, combined with cylinder deactivation, more than 100 mpg. Details in the press materials Revenge handed out were fairly thin, but we hear it also runs on kitten whispers and makes a mean banana smoothie.

On a more realistic front, the Verde uses Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and Michelin is officially supplying Pilot Sport PS2 rubber. Revenge hopes to sell 3000 vehicles worldwide over four years—another slice of sky pie—beginning later this fall, at a price of “just under $200,000.” The hood, doors, and engine cover will be aluminum, the rest is carbon fiber; weight is said to be 3500 pounds. Revenge says either actual, real engine will propel the car to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds or so. Two final-drive ratios will be offered, with one offering a totally believable top speed of 240 mph. (With the other ratio, the car will run out of steam at just under 200 mph.)

So, yeah, a few things about this car are pretty unbelievable, and we’ve seen a lot of big-hype supercars disappear in a cloud of vapor. But this Revenge could be sweet, given both the big names involved and the proven underpinnings. We’ll see.
