in terms of greening up the sky, as you said, this "lean aircraft initiative" ray has been a part of is going to be a major aspect in the design and manufacture of nearly every plane in the skies going forward, for years to come. that's just huge.
but the program was started to focus on lean manufacturing -- that's COST CUTTING. here are some docs from the early years, more than a decade ago:
