Update leukapheresis procedure.

Funding for Tracy.

June 23, 2023

It has been a few weeks since my last update and it has certainly been a very busy couple of weeks filled with hope and gratitude as always.

I have now completed the Leukapheresis procedure and sincerely hope I don't have to do that again. Purely because it was so draining. (Literally)

My appointment was at Kings College on Monday 12th at 8.30am and so I traveled the previous evening. This time accompanied by my darling mam. The epitome of love, patience and kindness.

The procedure in itself was actually not as bad in practice as I had imagined it would be. Needles (rather large) are inserted into each arm, the left arm is kept as still as possible for the entire blood draw, a challenge in itself.

The blood is returned via my right arm, which I can use for holding a book, phone etc. Lucky for me I have very prominent veins which actually makes things so much easier. (If not an anaesthetist would have to insert a needle via the neck).

Beside me the machine whizzed and whirred whilst doing its job of procuring the blood cells that would join my frozen tumor already in situ in Cambridge. It takes time for the machine to get into its stride and the nurses are waiting to view a deep pink colour within only then can collection start.

I think for me the worst part of the process was the waiting.

Waiting, waiting, waiting.

I was told I would be in this position for a minimum of 5 to 6 hours, if all went to plan.

I spent the majority of the time just thinking about how on earth I ended up in this position. It is still very surreal and I sometimes feel I am just going through the motions and wonder to what end. It was also an opportunity to reflect. To think about how my life has changed so dramatically and how there is good in that also.

I appreciate so much more now and I want for less. I try not to take anything for granted and I try not to worry about the little things....a work in progress for me. More importantly I'm learning the importance of self care and that its OK to put myself first sometimes.

The nurses performing the process had such lovely attitudes, infectious smiles and ensured my utmost comfort at all times. When the procedure was finally completed the nurses removed the needles and my precious blood cells were transported via a courier already on standby.

Following some blood tests to ensure I was safe to leave and another few hours of waiting I was finally discharged and headed back to the hotel to rest for the remainder of the day.

Marvelling at the wonders of modern technology and the possibility that this procedure may actually become protocol in the NHS in the next few years. A massive step forward and hopefully something that will eventually be available in all hospitals globally where it is required.

Back home in Ireland on Tuesday and that will be it until I get the confirmation that the Vaccine is manufactured. This will most likely be mid/end of July.

Ever closer.

The week ended with an interview by Sinead Brassil on my Local radio station in Drogheda. LMFM. An opportunity to tell a bit of my story and to promote an upcoming comedy gig that is taking place on the 30th June at the TLT in Drogheda.

Five wonderful comedians have generously donated their time and talent to help 'Laugh in the face of Cancer'.

The Venue, promotion and marketing has all been provided so generously by the TLT and a massive shout out must go to Colin Mulhall and Ciara Leddy who have been incredible organising all of this.

It promises to be a good night and will hopefully lift spirits whilst increasing awareness of Glioblastoma, brain cancer and crucially help my fund to get to where it needs to be.

So close. So very close.

Thank you all for your ongoing support.
