I remember reading very clearly that this was not of the blind kind, in at least the physicians know how it is going. I wish I still had that link.

If you think about it, there is not need of blind or double-blind if the measure is the life-expectancy, all cards can be on the table at all times.

You need only proof of fair enrollment of test and control groups, and if I heard right the "control group" is the current standard of care measure. That would mean that the entire study is the "test group".

It has been a while I may be confusing things, but please feel free to correct me on this.
