If I can interject, it’s because they don’t have to borrow the shares to short. They have a built in hedge. They can simply deliver the long shares to cover, which is what Adage partially did recently. Less risky. Also, the act of them buying big stakes runs the stock up so they can short at a higher level to begin with. Their end game depends on whether they want to flip and go back long for the next run up or not. But that would mean acquiring shares in the market to cover, which requires the shares being available at whatever price. They are really not available in this price range. Who purchased the tutes shares that were sold? Or did they simply deliver their own shares to cover and did not really sell? Big question, no clear answer.
