Seeing that the short interest was 7,535,438 shares in Nov and now 6.13 mil some of them have been covering while others may be shorting and digging their hole a little deeper.

I also understand the days to cover because of the avg volume however, that's not realistic as they could cover faster than that on any given day/week.
