Rep. Cook Issues Statement on New Cuba Regulations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Paul Cook (R-Apple Valley), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, issued the following statement on the Treasury, Commerce, and State Department regulations issued today to implement President Trump’s Cuba policy changes announced last June.

Chairman Cook: “Today’s action is a positive step towards preventing U.S. financial resources from going to the Cuban military and security services amidst continued questions about the attacks on American diplomats that occurred in Havana. However, I’m concerned that the new regulations and the State Department’s initial list of restricted Cuban entities may not be strong enough to meet the President’s goal of protecting U.S. security interests and supporting the Cuban people in their fight for freedom. I look forward to working with the Administration in my new capacity as Chairman to strengthen these regulations, ensure U.S. businesses and travelers do not inadvertently contribute to the oppression of the Cuban people, and seek a solution to resolving U.S. certified property claims.”

A member of the House Natural Resources, Armed Services, and Foreign Affairs Committees, Cook served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.
