For years I had a big expensive desktop computer I built myself (to Bruce Thompson's specs), then for a trip I bought an Acer Aspire laptop with WinXP at Bruce's suggestion.
About two years ago I wanted to try out Win10 so I bought a cheap CHEAP Lenovo laptop on sale for like $99 and added a docking station plus a large screen TV as a monitor. Didn't expect much, just wanted to explore the new OS. Like you, I'm not a power user, but was pleasantly surprised to find out this cheap little machine does everything I need it to do (mostly use it for trading) and now it is my main machine, faster, smaller and lighter to carry with me than the Acer. I love it (after disabling Cortana and other intrusive aspects of Win10) -- easy to disconnect and reconnect to the docking station. Don't expect to ever buy another desktop.
I don't care for HPs, but still happy with my 9 yr old Acer Aspire -- it as an excellent machine.

PS Bruce may be gone but he is not forgotten. RIP, Bruce, and thanks for all your help on this thread over the years.
