Alabama is just weird period. When I went to my son's basic training graduation at Ft Benning, the clerk at the rental car agency in Atlanta asked me where I was headed. I told him. OK, he said you need a car with AL plates. I asked why on earth? Ft. Benning straddles GA and AL. You pretty much can't get where you're going without crossing the state line.

The clerk said the GA MPs will know you're there for a reason and leave you alone if you have AL plates unless you are breaking a law. The AL MPs look at GA plates as an opportunity to generate revenue- whether or not you give them a reason.
