Just so you know you are not the only engineer to retire in their mid 50's. I was an enginner also and quickly moved into management. I retired at 52. I knew how to work with difficult engineers and get the most out of them which is one reason I did so well. After retirement I was a city commissioner, Lieutenant in a volunteer fire department in charge of a big ass pumper truck, and president of the board for the fire department for many years. I have moved to another city and now I am very involved with our homeowners assoiciation. So managing things comes natural to me.

In my experience I have never seen a "good" manager talk down to other people the way you do. So I think your decision (to not be moderator) is a good one.
