conix -- and not with any tolerance, let alone support, for what he endured/those who did it, but, as to your oh-so-lustily brandishing 'liberal':
yah, yah, yah -- more than enough to go around, all around -- the Church and other non-Catholic Christian situations, various and sundry sanctimonious blowhard hard-right pervs along the way, etc. -- heck at least one state law (Kansas, I think) up to just a couple of years ago allowed 14-year-olds to be married, with one or a couple I believe still allowing at 15 (and never mind our practices at the time of our founding and for many years thereafter), pretty well giving (having that recently given) even some of the worst of the remaining old-style/originalist Islamic cultures a run for their money in that respect
that sort of thing has, of course and after all, been present throughout human social history, across cultures and times, in no way new -- has been good to see in our more recent history generally increasing awareness of and at least attempted action against that sort of thing (along with other forms of human exploitation) -- however fitful, improvements in some places and setbacks in others, real progress remains
