$500 seems high to me. But even without the direct cost you have issues with taking physical posestion.

You will have a paper cert that is the REAL object. Take very good care of it. Don;t lose it.

I once had one (from a company that was previously private) and to deposit it I first had to go to a bank and get a signature "guarantee" (not just a notary). Then I had to drive it to Merryl as if I lost it, tough luck.

I feel MUCH better with my shares in the hands of broker.

Moving them to a cash, non margin, account prevents them from being loaned, but really matters little. The broker owes you the shares, period.
