Diesel prices are a good comparison to F&F. Long ago the trucking industry had a strong lobby and was able to keep taxes on diesel fuel very low and well below gasoline. Then when private cars started running on diesel more and more the taxes were moved up similar to gasoline. Kinda like how F&F used to have a strong lobby supporting them.
Then carbon and acid rain became the big evil and big diesel trucks were the face of that evil, so punishing the industry with taxes and reduced subsidies and carbon/sulfur requirements became the goal of politicians and prices moved even higher. Just like now F&F are the face of evil in the banking/investment/wall street areas and legislation to restrict/control/punish F&F became very popular.
It will be interesting to see where this goes in the next 10 years.
