There are currently estimated to be over 17-20 million+ shipping containers in the world, with 5-6 million in regular use on ships, trucks, and trains, which leaves a lot of extras for making buildings.

If you’re looking to use a metal shipping container as an alternate building material, you can get a 20' container for between $1,400-$2,800, and a 40' container for $3,500-$4,500.

Of course retrofitting will cost you a bit more, but even an all-in cost of $15,000 is a huge savings from a traditionally built home.

What type of floor space can you expect? For one 20' container: 160 S.F., for a 40' container: 320 S.F.
