I'm quite familiar with the conglomerate fad of the late-1960s/early-1970s. I owned shares in Gulf and Western industries (RIP). Your point is well taken.

BUT: Many GW acquisitions were beaten down and needed lots of management help. Furthermore conglomerates themselves were often weak financially. Buffett is famously choosy about his acquisitions and is a financial powerhouse with access to incredibly cheap funding... insurance float, which is largely non-callable.
