Because until that happens why would there be a reason to know who holds what gold? I think the Chinese want to hold our feet to the fire in that regard because they hold much more gold reserves than anyone gives them credit to have. The U.S. may hold much less now, so if the actual numbers come out the world would see who is actually holding more "real" money.
That might be China. How might that change world perception of who has the most credible currency? That might cause a flight out of dollars and into the Yuan.
It may not now be in the U.S.'s best interest to reveal their gold holdings, but they may be forced to in the end.
