Re:

44 tons per acre? That is a misplaced decimal point!

...That's what I originally thought too, until I looked into it further...

Here's some additional math to contemplate:

From a Canadian government publication...

At 1,361 vines per acre, only 6.61 pounds of fruit per vine are required to produce 4.5 tons per acre at maturity. Larger yields per vine would be required to maintain 4.5 tons per acre at lower densities with smaller per vine yields required if planting density was increased.

And from the book "From Vines to Wines in Classical Rome: A Handbook of Viticulture and Oenology in Rome and the Roman West by David L. Thurmond...

Planting densities throughout the modern world vary enormously, from as low as 500 vines per hectare (235/acre) to as high as 50,000/ha (23,500/acre).

Here's the conclusion we can draw when combining the information:

If, 1,361 vines per acre yields 4.5 tons per acre... Then, 23,500 vines per acre could yield 77.67 tons per acre

This actually makes 44 tons per acre quite possibly a low estimate (and may NOT be a misprint).
