Augmented Reality has great potential in the world of patient care, recovery and surgery. Its functionality has the potential to benefit a range of clinical, educational and training applications.

Augmented Reality (AR) is a powerful technology enabling digitally generated 3D/2D images to be overlaid onto real world environments. Think of movies like Minority Report which uses AR to control systems and display information, or Terminator which displays information in the eye of the main cyborg character.

These are examples of information display and systems control, but that is just half the story. Imagine the amputee that has phantom pain or poor limb control; or the stroke victim with paralysis or weakness, both caused by the damaged part of the brain.

By employing AR and visualizing the normal movements of the paralyzed, lost or disabled limb, the brain can be reactivated. This reactivation promotes re-learning of motor function and sensory processing, rewiring the brain when coupled to conventional rehabilitation therapies.

Imagine getting ready to perform surgery on a gall bladder. Technicians have loaded the patients 3D body scanned data into the system from CATScan and MRI sources; the Copy for Eblast #1 To Select of TBMG’s 10M List augmented information and displays have been registered to the real world through a navigation system. And the predetermined surgical plan has been loaded into the AR system. The surgeon puts on the head mounted display and now has a significantly expanded access to information, 3D anatomy display and guided tour of the operation.

Our panelists are leaders in medical innovation as well as industry.
