Over time I visited at least two, maybe three aircraft carriers. I mean it is amazing to watch how the land, take-off and jockey all the jets on the deck. I went into the operations room. There would be two men and they had what appeared to me to be something like a linking log set. I asked what it was. I thought it was some board game they were playing to kill time.The board had small wooden models of the jets. Every time one took-off or landed or need to be parked the board reflect exactly where every plane was. I asked why not do that on a computer. Was told this is the way they always did it and always will. They said they wanted to touch, see and just "feel" the operation because it was so important. So when you mentioned compasses and pencils, it reminded me off the aircraft carriers and maybe keeping it simple is better.
