My mother had one. The pot itself was very heavy aluminum. Like yours, it was probably about 6 quarts; the only fairly big pot we had. My mother just about never made anything in quantity. She did, however, sometimes use it for stews and the like. I don't recall her ever using it as a pressure cooker.
Pressure cookers had been very popular back in the 30s and early 40s, when Efficiency in the Kitchen was everything. Certainly more important than taste. Then when slow cookers arrived in the late 60s or early 80s, they largely replaced what pressure cookers were left.
Now the pressure cookers are making a comeback. Evidently they're much safer. Chances are you won't end up with serious burns, or even food all over the ceiling.
There was once a very funny episode of Tony Bourdain's show. He was in India. Three generations of women were preparing a meal for him in their home kitchen. They were using at least three pressure cookers. Tony cowered in the living room, waiting for an explosion that never came.
