Every fuel cell manufacturer is reducing the amount of platinum or eliminating it completely. Many research organizations have recently announced new technologies, whether any make it to replace platinum in real world situations remains to be seen.

meanwhile lower cost through lower use of platinum and automation of the cell stack assembly will help drive the cost of HEVs.

Mercedes putting in a slightly bigger battery than necessary to give the driver 50 miles of pure EV is sensible and the extra cost is not a lot to mercedes buyers!
