There is some interesting info on Mal’s religion-inspired business activities in this somewhat dated article.

Where the fundamentalist Christian link arises is through the US-based Full Gospel Businessman's group. Empire Energy’s chairman is Richard Shakarian who is the Full Gospel Businessman’s international head. Bendall led the group’s Tasmanian chapter.

But although Mal had some success in extracting investment funds from his small band of devoted followers he never scaled the lofty heights achieved by Joseph Smith and Ron Hubbard.

As well as God giving Mal the tip on there being giant structures filled with oil in Tasmania an aborigine also helpfully revealed in another vision the actual place to drill at Bruny Island.

It’s incomprehensible why Mal failed when he had both Christian and home-grown Aboriginal religions taking such a close interest in his efforts.
