I wish I could articulate my thoughts
better. At least you know what I'm talking about. Part of what I was trying to say is no one is untrained aboard ship, some have more experience than others. On the Forrestal the inexperienced pumped so much water into the ship it took on a list. They were using water instead of foam to control a fuel fire and just spread it around to other parts of the ship!

As for McCain the only times I ever heard the term "wet start" is when they are trying to blame the fire on McCain. If I understand it correctly the pilot can add more fuel and when it ignites it looks impressive but doesn't hurt anything. In this case McCain's plane was on the port side facing the island on the starboard with the rear of the plane hanging over the side. A wet start if it exists wouldn't do anything. The fire on the Forrestal was started when an F4 on the starboard side aft started it's engines and an electrical surge fired a rocket and hit the external fuel tank on a plane near McCain's on the port side. They had changed procedure, the electrical connection to the rocket shouldn't have been made until the plane was on the catapult for launch when the rocket would have gone out to sea. McCain's plane was engulfed in fire and he only got out by walking to the nose of his plane, hanging on the refueling probe and dropping to the deck. I doubt he had even started his plane.
