If that was the case I would ask then why not PR it?

They know shareholders are upset with management. They could easily issue a PR saying the company is in contact with first financial as the CEO plans to step down into the role of chief science officer or whatever and are currently seeking to replace him.

That alone would probably put a floor in or provide a bit of a bump.
