Joe Novelli, Sony's general manager of personal audio, said the answer is simple. Sony won't put the Walkman brand on just any product. It needs to meet certain standards, with regard to size, durability and battery life.

"Apple can only do this one type of product," said Novelli, portraying Apple as a one-chip pony. "We can do this full range of products."
