I WAS THINKING BACK ON MY FIRST FACE TO FACE MEETING WITH GENE

It was in the fall of 2008. We had both come to New York. There was a biotech conference sponsored by Rodman and Renshaw. Another investor in NNVC and I asked Gene to lunch.

After he got through charming and impressing us, he charmed our server, a very beautiful young woman. After the meal, my friend and I had a chance to review our encounter. We both mused that it must be great to be able to be so charming so effortlessly. Never for a minute did we thing he was trying to con us. Who knows maybe at that point he wasn't.

But now it's plain to see there is a dark side to every favorable attribute. Everything came so easily to Gene that he got to avoid the bangs, bruises, and dings that most of us take as we go through life. But it is those scrapes with the reality of life that keep us grounded. Gene was denied those reality-checks and as a result, he goes off the rails.
