I think you're right that if the fee is paid it is final, but I think what Brettj is talking about is the possibility that the allowance can be withdrawn before the fee is paid. I guess it becomes a question of whether they paid the fee or not before going public with it. I believe a lot of companies wait to pay the fee so they can decide if they want to file another patent based on the first one.

In any case, it does make you wonder if there really is nothing else positive to report right now.
