"Energy Secretary Rick Perry recently completed a tour of several of the national labs that fall within his department and has been very favorably impressed. He has been quoted in a recent Associated Press article by Matthew Daly as saying, “If you work at a national lab … you are making a difference.” He has said the United States can “drive economic growth and protect the environment at the same time.” When asked about the proposed budget reduction for research, he commented, “I will remind you this is not my first rodeo when it comes to budgeting.” It is encouraging that the Energy Secretary has become committed to supporting the national laboratories. But much more than his support for applied research is needed if NETL is to be given the financial and policy support so needed to advance the commercialization of new technologies supporting coal and natural gas, and the energy economy in general."
