Abstract
An adhesion assessment and corrosion evaluation of INI Heat
Shield™ Translucent PT Coating was performed on a ductile iron
pipe section. Testing methods of ASTM D3359 adhesion
standard testing was used to evaluate durability, longevity and
adhesiveness. Test results showed classification 5B (best) of
ASTM D-3359 ratings. 30-day saltwater submersion and outdoor
weather evaluation of Heat Shield™ Translucent PT Coating
showed no signs of corrosion.
Methods and Results
Test method B of ASTM D3359 was performed on Heat Shield™
Translucent PT after measurement of 2-3 dry mil coating
thickness (Figure 1). This method uses # cuts in the surface.
Pressure sensitive tape is then applied and removed. The edges
of the cuts are then observed. Our results showed that the edges
of the cuts were completely smooth. Rating of 5B.
Outdoor corrosion testing of Heat Shield™ Translucent PT was
performed by coating a ductile iron pipe and exposing it to
outdoor and saltwater conditions for 30 days. Additional testing
for spread of corrosion was done. An X was cut into the coating
while undergoing 30 days of outdoor exposure. Results showed
no spread of corrosion (Figure 2), no saltwater corrosion or
outdoor weathering corrosion (Figure 3).
