Barmen call it amateur night. Those who wonder why usually find out the next morning.
With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Friday this year, spending is expected to reach a $5.3 billion, up from $4.4 billion last year, according to the industry trade group National Retail Federation; that’s the highest in the federation’s 13-year history of the survey. Some 27 percent of that money will go on a party or a bar. If New Year’s Day is the Super Bowl for hangover cures, then St. Patrick’s Day is March Madness, particularly as most of the time green-clad revellers have to work the next day.
Market researcher Euromonitor estimates that there are 2.6 billion hangovers in the U.S. each year.
