As opposed to? What are the other ways company votes are taken?

Every single proxy or vote for every single stock I've owned for over 15 years has been by mail, with instructions on optional electronic voting in the mailer, but the initial contact was through the mail. So why is this "ballots will be coming by mail" noteworthy? What were the other possibilities? Courier? Train? Stork?
