Some 3,000 scientists and engineers at the GE Global Research center in Niskayuna are developing a new wave of technology that will lead to new products in health care, energy and aviation.

Research at the site led to the development of General Electric’s new fuel cell business last year
. That operation is now headquartered about 30 minutes away in the town of Malta in Saratoga County.

GE is one of four major players when it comes to innovation and research in the region. SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany houses some 3,500 scientists and engineers who are focused on driving down the cost of solar energy products and creating smaller and more powerful computer chips.

Another hub is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy where students, faculty and support staff are conducting research in biotechnology, manufacturing and data analytics.

And the newest player in the region is GlobalFoundries. The computer chip maker in Malta is owned by an investment arm of the Abu Dhabi government and designs and manufactures chips for companies around the world. GlobalFoundries has hired more than 3,000 people in the region since construction of its $10 billion complex began in 2009.

U.S. technology and engineering conglomerate GE said on Saturday it had signed $15 billion of business deals with Saudi Arabia as part of the kingdom's drive to diversify its economy beyond oil.
It came as dozens of senior U.S. business executives met Saudi counterparts at a conference coinciding with the visit of President Donald Trump to Riyadh.
The agreements, which involve almost $7 billion of goods and services from GE itself, ran ge from the power and healthcare sectors to the oil and gas industry and mining, GE said. Some of the deals are memorandums of understanding which would require further agreements to materialize.
