Market Chatter: Apple Said to Incorporate Waterproof and Wireless Charging in iPhones Due for Launch in 2017

01:39 PM EDT, 06/14/2017 (MT Newswires) -- Apple's ( AAPL) iPhone assembler Wistron said waterproof and wireless charging will be included in the new 5.5-inch iPhones to be launched later this year, according to a report from Nikkei Asian Review.

"Assembly process for the previous generations of [iPhones] have not changed much, though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit," Wistron CEO Robert Hwang was cited as saying after an annual shareholders' meeting Wednesday.

Apple ( AAPL) will probably release another 4.7-inch handset with flat display and a premium version with a slightly curved screen, the report noted.

Hwang said he expects Wistron to sell more smartphones in 2017 than in 2016, without providing a specific figure.

Shares of AAPL were off 0.6% while shares of Energous ( WATT) , which is a developer of wire-free charging systems, were up 1.5% in recent trade.
