TSA trialing fingerprint screening and check-in

The Transportation Security Administration has started testing fingerprint check-in and screening at two US airports.

Biometric fingerprint sensors were rolled out at Denver and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airports this week and can be used by members of the TSA's expedited PreCheck program.

During the trial period passenger ID and boarding pass still needs to be shown but a working system in the future can technically screen and approve a passenger's identity through the PreCheck database which will also function as a virtual boarding pass.

"TSA looks at technologies and intelligence capabilities that allow us to analyze and secure the travel environment, passengers and their property. Through these and other technology demonstrations, we are looking to reinvent and enhance security effectiveness to meet the evolving threat and ensure that passengers get to their destinations safely," said TSA's acting assistant administrator Steve Karoly.

Passengers not enrolled in PreCheck can also use the system.

Depending on its success, it will be rolled out in an expanded trial program to other airports.
