Regarding that shilling; it is 12 new pence. When I lived in England the banks were shut down for three days as the currency was decimalized. 12 Pence prior to the even was worth about 12 US cents, whereas afterwards 12 new pence became worth about a US Quarter. For years the Pound was worth about $2.40, (as British penny about the same value as the US penny.) that begin to change significantly after the change. I don't know how much, if any, the currency change in the United Kingdom had on the value. I believe there were other forces at work that were international in scope.

The term "six pence" was the value of a shilling. The shilling coin is one of the few coins that remained in circulation, but under the name 12 new pence.
