Meirluc, it does not matter what the patients dies of. They could be run over by a car and that counts as an event.

There is a very good reason why cancer trials are run this way. Chemos work by killing cells that are dividing. Cancer cells divide much faster than normal cells. So hopefully the chemos are killing off the cancer faster than they kill the patient.

It should be clear though that a chemo might well slow down the cancer while making the patient more vulnerable to other problems that could be fatal.

And thus, all deaths count.

DCVax (and other new immuno agents) do not work this way. Maybe sometime we can find ways to run trials better. But for now, it is OVERALL survival. So even old age deaths count.
