Mad Dog Mattis Promises to Annihilate ISIS So They Can’t Fight Anywhere Else

Defense Secretary James Mattis summed up the United States’ military strategy against the Islamic State terror group in one word: annihilation.

Speaking at a media briefing Friday at the Pentagon, Mattis said President Donald Trump had directed a “tactical shift” that included encircling fighters of the terror group and forcing them out of safe locations where they could be annihilated, the Washington Examiner reported.

Mattis said that by ensuring terrorists can’t get away or return to their home countries, we are also ensuring that the problem doesn’t simply move from one place to another.

Mattis added that commanders in the region have also been given greater authority.

“Those foreign fighters are a threat, so by taking the time to deconflict, to surround, and then attack, we carry out the annihilation campaign so we don’t simply transplant this problem from one location to another,
” Mattis said, according to a transcript of the briefing. “We drive them down to a point where the locals can handle that and it’s no longer a trans-regional, transnational threat.”

The strategy, he explained, was to force Islamic State group militants to give up their heavy equipment, so that they are less like an armed force and more like a criminal gang. At that point, local police can take over.

“We’re there to drive ISIS to its knees,” Mattis said.

Mattis didn’t mention a timeline when discussing how to defeat the terror group, but he called it a “transnational, long-term threat.”

In other words, as long as it takes.
