VIX Fix: Volatility Awakens

Approaching the four month mark of the Trump Presidency, markets have performed unusually well in an environment plagued with uncertainty. Even after a number of geo-political dramas, major market indicators all saw recent record highs, while the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) experienced lows not seen in more than two decades. Investors reached their tipping point on Wednesday, when it was learned that a Special Prosecutor has been appointed to investigate the President. Reacting to this news, the Dow plunged more than 300 points and the VIX Index spiked 46% into the 16s, before pulling back Friday to the 12-range. So, as events continue to play out on the political stage, volatility just may have become a cast member in the next act.
