borusa: The problem for AMD is...

It doesn't have the scale to compete. It doesn't have compilers like Intel. It doesn't have it's own fabs. It doesn't have the incumbency. It doesn't have all the enterprise tools Intel has. Intel started taking serious Server share with the Pentium. Yet even by 2000 Sun still dominated the net with it's servers. Intel had to find the way into enterprise. Get all the enterprise tools and work up ancillary businesses like Gb ethernet. Even when AMD had the Athlon it only took about 25% share. AMD is in a much weaker position now. It probably will get some share of single socket servers. And that is a pretty big market. But that market has a very competent incumbent. And you never get in trouble going with Intel. So its a steep climb.
