French Intelligence: ‘Major Doubts’ On Effectiveness Of Obama’s Chemical Weapons Deal With Assad

Outright failure ...

A declassified French intelligence report on the April 4 chemical weapons attack in Syria offers compelling evidence that the Obama administration’s 2013 deal to relinquish the Syrian government’s chemical weapons arsenal was an outright failure.

Syria in 2013 agreed to disclose and relinquish its chemical weapons stockpile with the help of their ally, Russia. The Obama administration was the chief proponent of the agreement following a 2013 sarin gas attack that killed 1,400 Syrian citizens.

But the recently declassified “national evaluation” report by France found that “major doubts remain as to the accuracy, exhaustiveness and sincerity off the decommissioning of Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal.”

French intelligence found that Syria maintained a capacity to produce and stock chemical weapons, despite its commitment to relinquish its entire arsenal in 2013.

The intelligence report alleges that the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime attempted to acquire “dozens of tons” of isopropanol, a key ingredient in making sarin gas, after committing to the disarmament deal.

Most concerning, the report found that the OPCW Declaration Team responsible for monitoring Syrian agreement was entirely ineffective.

“The OPCW itself has identified major inconsistencies in Syria’s explanations concerning the presence of sarin derivatives on several sites where no activity relating to the toxin had been declared,” the report stated, adding that the OPCW “has been unable to obtain any proof of the veracity of Syria’s declarations.”

French intelligence assesses that failure of the international community to keep Syria accountable to their chemical weapons deal Syria resulted in “over 100 allegations” of chemical weapons use by the Assad regime since 2014.

The findings were enough for France to definitively state that Assad was behind the April 4 chemical weapons attack which killed more than 80 civilians in the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun.

The report is a slap in the face to former Obama officials, some of whom as recently as January proclaimed success in relinquishing Syria’s entire chemical weapons stockpile.
