Passing on a problem and for me the solution was new.

Problem : leak in 3/4 copper tubing and need to sweat on a new valve to replace the faulty unfixable valve. For a complicated reason we could not get all the water bone dry out of the copper tubing to solder the
new replacement parts, even heated the valve so hard it melted the washer inside the 3/4 sweat valve .

Solution: we used a union so that we could sweat one side at a time while pipe was now open so that we could prevent water leveling or standing, and now we could tip any water out with the "give" motion and then solder ( heat, tip down the tubing so any drops run out then solder pronto pronto. When the soldering was complete we connected both ends of the union with the pliers.
