Since 1965 when LEDs (light emitting diodes) were first used commercially, improvements have doubled the brightness of LEDs every 3 years. (shown on a logarithmic chart)

Infra-red LEDs were first used in remote controls, and as brighter LEDs were developed they were used as displays in calculators.

"Electron holes" or electron deficits in the semiconductor material emit photons each time an electron fills the hole. The light is the only energy created with some heat created by resistance in the semiconductor material. In bright lighting LEDs additional heat is created by the transformer which converts AC current to DC.

As the photon frequency is discrete for each type of semiconductor material, mixed spectrum light is created with a mix of semiconductor materials and or a layer of phosphors over the LED which emit additional spectrum.

We've run out of other people's Social Security taxes needed to subsidize our low income tax rates.
