VIX FIX: Geopolitics and Volatility, The Odd Couple

Normally, during times of high political uncertainty, markets are rife with volatility. However, for much of this year, this has not been the case. The first quarter of 2017 ranked as one the least volatile quarters on record, as seen with an average CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) reading of 11.70 during the period, well below its historical moving average of about 20. So as the world turns its attention to the rising tensions in Syria and the upcoming French elections, which could have potential Brexit and U.S. election style ramifications on volatility, the honeymoon may be coming to an end.
