One data point that has stuck with me and been a puzzlement was some research done on mice with MS. They injected amyloid into the mice's brains and it increased their MS. On a whim they injected it into their bodies outside the blood/brain barrier. To their total surprise it reduced their MS.

The most important thing to know about amyloid is they really have no idea what it actually does in the body.
