Canadian cannabis stocks popped today after the Liberal government provided much greater clarification on its agenda for the legalization of marijuana. A CBC report indicates that the Trudeau government will introduce cannabis legalization in April. Given the time required for consultation with the provinces and final drafting, this suggests that cannabis legalization could/should become a reality by Canada Day 2018.
Several cannabis stocks jumped on the news, led by Aurora Cannabis (TSX: V.ACB, OTCQB: ACBFF, Forum) and Canopy Growth Corp (TSX: WEED, OTCQB: TWMJF, Forum), up 10% and 9% on the day respectively. Canadian markets traded mixed on the day with the S&P/TSX Composite up while the Venture Exchange was flat.
