Another big threat from North Korea is an EMP attack. All it takes is a relatively small atomic device at the right altitude and you could send a large part of the US back into the stone age since the EMP pulse will fry almost all digital electronic devices. For this type of attack, the older atomic type device will work, you don't necessarily need a more advanced thermonuclear device. And there are also conventional devices that can produce the EMP. Though it helps to be able to put the device into low earth orbit via a rocket/missile, a high altitude weather balloon could also deliver the device over the target.

Here's an interesting discussion on EMP by former CIA Director Woolsey and others (link below). The US is virtually defenseless against the effects of EMP. Air Force 1 is hardened against EMP, but almost nothing else is, even within the military, and the civilian infrastructure is completely unprotected.

It's estimated that a major EMP attack on the US would result in a 70% reduction in the US population within a year, mainly due to starvation due to a complete disruption of our food distribution system.
