A few years ago, we had an extremely mild winter. My brussel sprouts were the best I'd ever had. No bugs and perfect globes. It was a fluke, but I think I can use cold rows and get them thru a winter in the future. That would be a good project to try this fall. I don't have much luck keeping the cabbage moths and worms off my broccoli or sprouts. Maybe I need to concentrate on growing them when it's colder and the moths aren't around?

Strange cause my dahlia tubers got through the winter also. Last few winter they turned to mush. No idea why all of a sudden they be ok.

On your potatoes. Yes, that is exactly how I been doing it for years. Potato normally has 3 or more starts on it so cut it up. By letting them dry before planting that gives that part of the exposed part to toughen up so when placed in ground less chance of disease getting your tater.

That makes sense about the cut tater skin toughening. Thanks for sharing.

Sorry to hear about your salmon being contaminated. That stinks. Maybe you can find some fresh water alternatives that you over looked before. When one door closes, another opens.
