I posted this on another board. You guys can delete it if you like but I thought it was a pretty fun piece:

I hear people complaining because it's not what they bought into...

Well that's like walking into a bar that's playing disco. You say, wow, this is a place where I could meet the girl of my dreams!! However time goes by and suddenly Disco is not cool anymore, so they started playing rock and roll. So you think you are entitled to listen to Disco still?

No, it's a company, making money serving drinks. They need clientele to make money. Nobody like Disco anymore. If you want the bar to stay open, you can either stay and listen to Rock and Roll, or you can leave. The bar isn't going to let itself go broke, they aren't going to play disco.

You say, but they kept advertising a disco bar! This is clearly a Rock and roll bar now. Well yes, they did, because they wanted the disco bar to work out, And they also knew that once in a while when it was slow they could play disco music. But it happened less and less. You should have seen the writing on the wall- The crowds were less and less every time they played disco, this place was going to go under if they didn't switch genres.

Luckily, the Boss was smart enough to hire a DJ that has a big Rock and Roll collection. But it cost a lot of money. So the bar lowered the cover charge, and now there's a lot of people I don't get along with in here. Your argument is now "but I paid a BIGGER cover to listen to DISCO!".

Well, here you are in a rock and roll bar that's jammin'. But now you are so crowded that you can't get a seat at the bar. You're not happy but you're too stubborn to leave. You sit there fuming in the corner, cursing at the management for making such a shitty change. This bar sucks you say. But, maybe it's still a place where maybe someday I'll meet the girl of my dreams. Time goes by and you continue to sit there and be a jerk to the other customers about how shitty rock and roll is.

Over time, the crowd thins. Rock and roll is kinda passe these days. It's never gonna go away completely, and the bar can continue to do business this way indefinitely, but the bar has certainly had better days.

Now we've still go you bitching in the corner about Disco. We've got a whole lot more rock and roll regulars bitching about how this place isn't as good as Vinny's down the road that plays better music. And well, someone threw a rock through the window a few weeks ago, so now the cold wind is blowing inside and it really is uncomfortable in here.

The owner needs to really step it up. He knows this, but the last time he advertised for a large new concert event, the guys at Vinny's down the street all came over and trashed the place. When they left, nobody wanted to step foot in here for weeks. The owner had to remodel forever it seems like.

So what's he doing now? He's planning a big event again, for the completion of the remodeling. He's decided that if he advertises too much for the event, then the guys from Vinny's will show up again and just trash the place. So I think this time he actually booked a really grade a performance by Pearl Jam. Very big act for this small venue. So he can't advertise, otherwise too many people will show up and again, nobody will have a good time and it would be like everyone paid for nothing.

I think the hope is that the day Pearl Jam performs, with no advertisements, the people who have sat here all this while will actually get to meet the band, have a great time. Could be a life changing experience. As the band is playing, the crowds will come, and it will be a renowned event. Everyone will have a good time, and some will decide to make this their new spot indefinitely.

So to all those Disco fans, maybe you'll start to like the new place once the remodeling is done. Maybe you'll enjoy being able to say you were a part of this before people knew its name. Maybe you'll take the autographs and sell them on ebay and never come back. Either way is fine.

One thing's for sure, bars are great places to hang out. There's always regulars. Sometimes people get in fights. Sometimes they change hands, change genre's to stay in business. If you are into what they are doing, great. If you don't know what's going on, pay careful attention to the writing on the wall. Always know where the exits are in case of fire. And don't forget to tip your servers. You never know when you are going to meet the girl of your dreams.
